I Was A Really Good Mom Before I Had to COOK ANYTHING.

by Trisha-and-Amy on January 4, 2010

Seriously…we each just spent oh, about an hour and a half cooking a really simple meal, only to have our kids whine and complain about the ‘funny smelling’ sauce on the chicken and the ‘craggly’ spinach (uh, ever heard of SAUTEED?). We are trying, really hard, to be good moms who offer up homemade meals. But why is it so hard? Why among all of the trillion cookbooks out there can we not figure this out? We’re down with the hotdogs and mac ‘n cheese 4 nights out of the week, but aren’t we supposed to step it up a little, some of the time? Ugh. Dinner is throwing us over the edge. Waaaay over.

Oh yeah, I’m over the dinner prep. Thankfully hubby will cook two large meals on the weekend, so we can slide through the week on leftovers. When they run out, there are always chicken drummets and pot pies from Trader Joe’s. I’m glad you two posted this! Happy New Year!

Try letting the kids serve you! Recently my 7-year-old wanted to prepare dinner, didn’t want my help, but solicited her brother’s. When she pulled out the Ritz crackers and jelly, I stepped in. I’m not eating that I said. Stay away she instructed, it’s not ready yet….It really ended up being a little feast, a smorgasbord, not all of which I ate, but at least they got a feel for what I go through. (The meal included entertainment also, a show provided by the kids. i drank wine and watched!)

Wow, you are speaking my language. This is how I feel most nights of the week trying to satisfy two picky children along with one semi-picky husband. I keep trying to make good meals that everyone should like, only to have someone complain about some part of the meal. I don’t even like to cook at all! Seriously, I would save every penny I have to hire a full time chef, just so they could get the flack from the kids and I’d actually get to enjoy meals.

Thank God for this post!! I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE cooking. And it is even worse when my husband is deployed because then I only have one “big” mouth to feed. I mean if it doesn’t have cheese on it, my two year old won’t eat it. Ugh.

Cooking is my thing, I LOVE it. HOWEVER, I realize that its not everyone’s “thing” and seeing as how we’re all good at some things and not so hot at others, I say you should give yourself a pass on this one. I can guarantee you that you ace some things cooking moms only dream of!
